Midem 2013, Cannes, France

IMG_3490Once again Bandplanet hit up Midem in the gorgeous French Riviera town of Cannes a few weeks ago to find out all the latest and greatest news and happenings in the music industry. We came, we saw, we hobnobbed, networked and partied (just a little – nothing unseemly, mind) – all in all, another great Midem!

Some nuggets of wisdom that we gleaned from our Midem 2013 experience:

  • The live music industry is thriving, because music lovers still want a real, authentic experience that can’t be replicated, and live music gives a shared, communal buzz like no other.
  • Vinyl lives! The resurgence in popularity of vinyl has been one of the more surprising and positive trends in the last year. Music fans still appreciate having a tangible physical object to obsess over; however, note that this is in addition to the digital download – no one is giving up the convenience of those anymore.
  • The convergence between music, tech and brands is ever increasing, with new partnerships and symbioses being formed. Just embrace it, don’t question it.
  • The most overused word at Midem: ‘disrupt/disruptive’, as in ‘Disruptive Creativity’ – quickest way to kill a buzzword.
  • YouTube is more important than ever for aspiring musicians and bands
  • Fans want to be involved with every step of the creative process, and artists need to harness this interest to their best advantage – your fans love you, so give back some of the good vibes with extras and special things for fans only.

Best in Show:

  • Midem Hack Day was inspiring and innovative.
  • Artists Speak To ArtistsMark Hoppus from Blink-182: Eloquent and so knowledgeable.
  • Seeing UK/French band Archive in the Magic Mirrors tent – such a brilliant live band. And seeing UK ska legends Madness milling around after their press conference, just like normal people.
  • The fabulous Carlton Hotel (where Hitchcock’s ‘To Catch A Thief’ was filmed) is just that – fabulous. The front bar is where all the informal, big deal schmoozing happens. Pretend like you’re someone rich and famous, and you’ll fit right in…

Go here for a short and sharp review of Midem 2013.

Midem 2014 will be held on 25-28 January 2014 in Cannes, France.

Band of the Month – Æquo

And the winner of Talento Crudo 2012 is…*drum roll*…

Æquo!

The 6-piece prog rock band from the Vitacura district of Santiago beat out a slew of other competitors to win Talento Crudo 2012, Chile’s largest rock talent spotting contest, winning flight tickets for themselves and their crew to the mighty Unirock Alternativo festival in Cali, Colombia, in March 2013.

From a field of 50 bands from 50 of Santiago’s 52 districts, Æquo impressed the judging panel with their carefully crafted and delivered metal/prog rock, expertly accompanied by Rodrigo Fuentealba’s electric violin and singer Daniela Guzmán’s stand-out vocals. A well-deserved win, if we do say so ourselves. Second place in the competition went to Tremocaliche from the Talagante district, and third place to Premio Nobel from district Providencia.

Congrats to all the bands who entered, and of course, huge congratulations to Æquo, Tremocaliche and Premio Nobel. Big kudos also to Talento Crudo festival organiser Francisco Conejera, as well as Consejo Nacional de la Cultura y las Artes (National Council of Culture and Arts) for creating and supporting such an important showcase for emerging talent. You guys rock!

Æquo are currently working on their first album and further honing their craft with live shows in various venues around Santiago – keep an eye out for them, they are definitely ones to watch. We are as proud as punch to be helping them on their way to rock superstardom! Next stop for Æquo – Unirock Alternativo 2013!

Talento Crudo 2012

Bandplanet loves to support emerging independent talent! That’s why Bandplanet was a key sponsor for the 2011 edition of Talento Crudo, Chile’s biggest talent-spotting competition. And wow, did the rock community of Santiago, Chile show us a fantastic time. Our ears are still ringing! We took the winners of Talento Crudo 2011, fierce Chilean rockers Chocloneta, to Unirock Alternativo in Cali, Colombia earlier this year, where they rocked the stage and won the hearts and minds of the Unirock audience.

Well, we had so much fun that we are doing it all over again in 2012. Talento Crudo 2012 is going to be huge – if you are an upcoming independent band, you don’t want to miss this one!

Talento Crudo will be held in October 2012, dates to be confirmed.

‘Músicos de Huechuraba’ Project, Santiago de Chile

We love to promote and support emerging artists, so we are pleased as punch to be sponsoring ’Músicos de Huechuraba’, a series of events organised by Huechuraba musicians in Santiago de Chile. Running each Saturday from now until November, the project presents bands and musicians from a different genre each week, providing a great platform for new and upcoming artists to showcase their talents. Upcoming weeks focus on jazz/funk, hip-hop, Pachanga/Cumbia, and solo/pop. Sounds good to us!

‘Músicos de Huechuraba’ has a mission – to search for emerging bands to represent the district of Huechuraba in Santiago de Chile for further national and international events, as well as to promote art and culture. Well, we all know that Chile is a veritable hotbed of talent, so we’re expecting to see some fantastic new artists at the events. Each event is filmed professionally, so that aspiring bands/artists have a high-quality recording to add to their music portfolios. The organizers also hope to stage an annual show to showcase the best bands from the previous performances.

‘Músicos de Huechuraba’ events are held each Saturday at Centro Cultural de Huechuraba, Avenida Recoleta 6178, Huechuraba, Chile, until 09.11.12.

For more information, contact Músicos de Huechuraba.

Did you feel the earth move a couple of weeks ago, perhaps on the 29 or 30th March? Well, we certainly did, and we know exactly where the epicenter was – Cali, Colombia. Not the result of tectonic plates scraping together, but the sound of 22 mighty rock bands colliding in an epic battle of guitar, metal and all-out fierceness at Unirock Alternativo Festival 2012.

Bandplanet alumni such as Chocloneta, MIUC, Rascacielo, Old Vintage, Kolectivo K, and Chamán rocked out at the 4th edition of the two-day festival, drawing a crowd of over 10 000 rock fans. We are reliably informed that it was two days of some of the best rock music to be found on this side of the moon. Hell yeah! Continue reading
